We maintain and develop our ethos through ‘Values Education’, circle time, special person and award assembly. We believe it is important for all members of our school to have high self-esteem in order to make the most of themselves.
At Cauldwell we believe that having certain values is an important part of children’s personal and social development. Each half term we focus on a different value and children are nominated for having demonstrated that value in our weekly Award Assembly. Values focussed on include Modern British Values of Democracy, the rule of law, tolerance and respect, responsibility and co-operation.
PSHE teaching is based on the Cambridgeshire Personal Development Programme (in collaboration with other schools in our cluster), SEAL (Social and emotional aspects of learning) materials and other materials relevant to the topics and our children. Stories are used where possible to introduce ideas and promote discussion. Topics covered in PSHE include Relationships, Citizenship, Healthy and Safer lifestyles and economic wellbeing.
During Years 5 and 6 children will be prepared for puberty, by learning about personal hygiene and will be helped to understand the physical and emotional side of growing up. They will be taught the difference between boys and girls through learning parts of the body and where babies come from in a planned and age- appropriate way. This will give them an important knowledge of their own bodies, and encourages them to get help from a trusted adult should they need to.
They will also learn about how to keep themselves safe and the effects of drugs, alcohol and solvents on the body.
Teaching of these areas will be supported by the school nurse, NSPCC and other outside agencies as appropriate.
We have an annual Health Week with focus on hygiene, safety and healthy eating. The week includes a sports day, healthy breakfast, visitors and various competitions.
